Backlinks Quality Vs Quantity?

This a guest Blog post, by Garen Arnold, who blogs about everything SEO every Friday.

Backlinks you need them in order to rank high in the search engines. They seem to be a big concern for a lot of affiliate marketers. Or shall I say seem to be a huge deal! I talk to a lot of experienced to novice affiliate marketers, and one of the keys that always tips me off about an newbie affiliate marketer is they seem to think the more backlinks, the better your site will rank in the SERPS.

This could not be any further from the truth though. However, there is more to it than just the number of backlinks pointing to your site. In fact, just because you have a million backlinks does not mean you are going to live at that number one spot on Google. I know the frustration of out doing the number one spot only to be ranked 5th on Google. It can drive you up the wall.

It is more about quality verses quantity. What this means if you have 2,000 links pointing at your site, and your competitor has 200 you are not going to beat them all the time. In fact, it has to do with how many good backlinks pointing to your site you have. To analyze this I always use seo elite because it will tell the amount of anchored links, and the quality of links pointing at a site. Also, another good tool is SEO Spyglasses.

"Backlinks Quality Vs Quantity?"You need to have relevant sites linking to you. Most importantly, you need to have your keywords in their title tags. Google pays extra attention to this and I would highly recommend that you don’t over look it. Believe me relevant backlinks can carry a ton of weight.

Also, you need to pay attention to the pagerank of the sites where the anchored text comes from. A site with a bunch of meaningless PR 0′s links to it can easily be beat en just by having a site with four or five PR4-5 linking to it. I made this mistake for several months when I was learning SEO and really couldn’t understand why I was being beat when I had 4 times as many backlinks pointing to my site.

So just remember before you go out and get a ton of backlinks; make sure they are relevant and do have a good PR. This tip could really be the deciding factor on where you rank in Google and I would highly recommend that you start building quality backlinks instead of just a ton of them.

ahh yes, quality over quantity any day. I’ve heard that a nice PR 5 backlink can be more valuable than 100 backlinks with a PR 0
