Business And Time Management For Work At Home Parents

Today is a guest blog post especially written by Dave Lianelli.

Being an entrepreneur with a 3-month old baby, I know business can be tiring while working from home. There’s always something else to do. And as the ‘stay-at-home’ dad or mom you also have to do the housekeeping.

That’s two full-time jobs. Those will get you very tired at the end of the day. I know from my own experience that being awake at night and having a full schedule during the day is both physically and mentally bad for your health. And you can’t simply take ‘a day off’.

Your family, baby and business needs you!

The moment you become the business ‘owner’ instead of the one working IN your business, you can spend some time off. Though it will take you a long time to reach that stage.

Meanwhile I’ve changed some things in the way I do things, and it really helped me have and enjoy more time with the family and less time working ‘on my business’.

Here’s what I did:

Step 1: No More ‘Always Online’

Technology offers us to be online at all times, but do we really have to? While spending time with your family, feeding the baby and having dinner together, turn off all the phones, laptops and everything else that can interrupt this ‘quality time’.

Any good business deal can wait a few minutes. Assistants  and JV partners have to eat dinner as well, so they’ll understand.

Do the same at least 2 evenings per week. Stop working at 8 or 9 PM and turn everything off. Watch a movie or go to a bar or club with your friends. Your relationships outside business are more important than anything else!

Instead of writing a To Do list or even using an agenda to schedule every task you need to complete – write out 6 to 8 blocks of time.

These blocks can be no more than 20 to 30 minutes. That’s the average time someone can put full attention on one task. After that time the quality and quantity of work you get done drops significantly.

This also gets your adrenaline pumping since you have to  complete a task in less than half an hour. Your brain starts working at enormous speeds to get the thing done within the limit you have given.

Plus, working 6 blocks of 30 minutes is just 3 hours of work a day. Consider that office clerks employ just 2.5 effective hours of work, you already beat them in productivity.

That gives you another 21 hours a day that you can spend the way you like. Instead of putting in 8 hours a day and getting demotivated since you can’t get anything done!

Step 3: Your Notepad Is Your Best Friend

The Generation Y is used to technology of all kinds, it’s a  part of their life. But instead of all kinds of tools, the plain old notepad can be your best friend.

I keep a notepad and pencil or pen with me all the time. Since you can get the best ideas at the weirdest times and places. Then you notice the battery of your iPhone is empty, and your brilliant idea is gone forever!

Getting out of the business gets your creative juices flowing, so when you’re out of ideas or have a big problem to tackle – get out of your house. And don’t forget your notepad!

Step 4: Get Out! Now!

The most important thing to keep in mind is that money isn’t the goal. It’s the means to get your desired life: doing what you want, whenever and wherever you want.

That’s why you read the word ‘autopilot ‘all across the internet…

You can setup an autopilot business, but not without  your you building it. Later on, your employees take over your roles. But a complete ‘perpetual mobile’ business doesn’t exist!
