How to avoid being blocked on Twitter

If you are a regular user on Twitter it can be devastating when you first get blocked by a fellow user on Twitter though if you use Twitter for business you need to expect a few of these over a period of time. However if you are getting many of them every day you have a serious problem and you need to starting planning your business on twitter. If you don’t want this to happen here is how to avoid being blocked on Twitter for good.

Firstly you need to make sure that you are not associated with spam in any way whatsoever. People think of Twitter as a form of building relationships through their own business brand and if you are not like this they will be put off by your online Twitter methods. The picture that you use is what people notice first so please give careful consideration for this. There is a new picture doing the rounds like the one below and many of them that use it are spammers:

There are a couple of legitimate Twitters that use this image but the majority are spammers so whenever I see this image no matter what the user name is I will block them immediately without even questioning it. Those that aren’t the spammers have simply seen how great the image looks and thought “I want that” used it on their own account without thinking about the consequences of their actions.

Staying with the image theory the other ones that are very off putting are those that have an advert in the picture as they come across as over selling yourself and make you look rather desperate. I want to know who I am dealing with I don’t just want to have an advertisement thrown straight at me before I have even visited the Twitter profile page of that particular user. Plus what bugs me most is not the fact that they have included a banner its more that it doesn’t even fit and looks plain old ugly.

Multiple twitter accounts is also a major problem with spammers and if I notice this all the accounts from the one user will be blocked as I see it as someone sending me the same tweet over and over again through different accounts. They are trying their absolute hardest to get a sale from me by sending me the same message several times. I also believe that multiple accounts would take so much more to run successfully therefore I don’t believe they would respond to me if i contacted them for one reason or another.

The worst part of the multiple Twitter accounts is that when people use them they don’t seem to change the picture and you will have a full page full to death of their tweets and it looks awful. From my point of few managing over 60,000 followers is hard enough but if someone is spamming me I am going to miss out on quality messages from real people with real business strategies.

"twitter blocked"Many people say that they block others for sending tweets too close together and I must admit I block them too. I have no problem with tweets being sent out every five minutes as we often are on twitter chatting to more than one person at a time but promotional tweets should never be this often. Four an hour is an absolute limit and two should NEVER be sent out at the exact same time as this looks awful and I would consider this as spam. The next thing I would do after seeing this is hit the block link immediately and remove them from my Twitter page.

I saw five messages from the same person today sent out at the same time and I know that it is spam because there is no way they c0uld type that many messages at once. For personal messages it doesn’t matter as you are communicating with others to build your business what I am talking about is just messages that ask people to visit a certain link. If you don’t want to get blocked for this never send out more than one per 15 minutes that involves a link.

The language barrier can sometimes be another issue – if you see a tweet in your time frame that is in Chinese and you are British you are never going to understand it and it is pointless you following this particular person. Therefore if you don’t want to fall into this trap stick with your own language only!

Finally bad language is one of the most annoying things on Twitter – I hate the way some people use swear words and any that I see will be blocked immediately. In the same way any adult accounts will soon be lost from my timeline as I want to keep my reputation as a professional Tweeter and if I had people like this following me my reputation will disappear pretty much immediately.

So there you have it my favouirte methods of how to avoid being blocked on Twitter if you implement these your blocks will decrease straight away.

Great points Samantha. Unfortunately too many people using twitter seem to view it as some sort of “the one with the most followers wins” type of game. The result is anti-social behaviour such as follow/unfollow/follow again then repeat as well as what you so accurately describe in this post.

Building a genuine following and following those with whom you want to connect or hear from, means that most of the behaviours that get you blocked don’t really come into play.

I fear these thoughts may fall on spammer’s deaf ears but it does seem as though the powers that be at Twitter HQ are beginning to take notice.

Thanks for the great article. I just am starting out on Twitter myself and definately don’t want to be kicked off for some tiny silly reason, or a big reason even. I agree that bad language should never be used in a forum like that, as its pretty unprofessional anyway. Thanks for the tips!
