I Sacked My Manager Before Christmas

At the end of November I made the decision to sack my manager. It was a very hard decision to make as he and his wife had worked for at least 18 months and obviously we had also developed a good friendship at the same time.

But the thing is in business you have to remember that you are in fact running a business not a friendship site and you have to think about this first.

The work went downhill from June so he did have five months to improve his work – but it just didn’t happen. Way too many mistakes on the work front later and I had to make a decision and it was to end his contract.

Before June 2011 the work was very good and that is what I will hold on to and I will not hold any grudges.

But with a manager once you have made the decision you also have to consider what work they have access to and the time that it takes to train someone else for the role. My internet business involves a lot of different duties and as a Manager they need to be trained in at least 50 different tasks. It doesn’t mean they complete all these tasks each week but staff that they are in charge of do so it is important that they know the work well.

"fired manager"So for the 6 weeks running up to Christmas I trained my Assistant Manager in all the tasks and along with her husband they work from home completing the work for me. And because of the difference in the quality of work she carries out – they actually earn double of what the previous manager did.

If you work for an internet company it is very easy to get promotion and our new Manager started off as a backlinker completing Angela’s packets for me more than two years ago.

Another reason why I worked on it in advance was because Managers have access to all kinds of sensitive information including passwords to blogs, websites and so on. So I did a full password reset the day before he left the company.

But what you have to remember is that a Manager should be there to help you not hinder you and that is exactly what I have now. My husband reckons I was too soft and should have removed him a long time ago but I like giving people a second chance.

Remember it is your business and your money and time that went into it so make sure you make the right decisions with it.
