If you want to make money blogging, don’t be motivated by making money blogging
Today is a guest post by internet marketer Jonathan Timar.
No, really, I am being serious. Being solely motivated by the desire to make money is the worst motivation you can have for trying to make money blogging, for several reasons:
You will make decisions based on what the money potential is, rather than based on what you actually enjoy. If you’re a blogger, you’ll be tempted to start a blog with a topic you do not know enough about, or do not have a great enough interest in, simply because you think you’ll make more money with it. This is a mistake! If you are not truly passionate about what you are doing you will burn out. At best you will become stale, at worst, you’ll quite altogether. Without a boss breathing down their neck, no one has the willpower to sustain something they do not enjoy.
You’ll be easily discouraged. You’ll give up if your idea does not generate money in the timeframe you expect. With nothing beyond dollar signs to motivate you, you’re likely to give up too soon.
You’ll become another copycat. Being inspired by success stories like Darren Rowse or John Chow is one thing, copying them outright is another matter. For several years those names, and a small handful of others, have been popping up whenever someone talks about making money online or professional blogging. More often than not those names are the only ones that pop up, and others aren’t being added to the list. That’s because those men own their niche, anyone else in that niche will have to perform some kind of voodoo magic to ever reach their level unless they bring something new and unique to the table. No one can love being John Chow as much as John Chow.
You’ll become distracted. When a new money making scheme pops up on the radar, you’ll start let other things fall by the wayside while you try out the latest and greatest, potentially wiping our any momentum you’ve worked hard to build.
You’ll spend more time reading about making money blogging that you will actually blogging, which is the only way to make money blogging.
You will come across as insincere. If you are writing about a topic only because you think doing so will make you money, your lack of interest will be apparent, and readers will lose interest in what you have to say.
When money is your only motivation, blogging will start to feel like any other job. It will become a chore. If really are hoping to eventually make money from your blog, do you want it to feel burdensome?
You will run out of ideas. Blogging is based on ideas, if you don’t have them, you don’t have a blog. If you are not genuinely passionate about your topic, and writing in general, it’s only a matter of time before you run out of things to say about it. On the other hand, if you are living it every day, you’ll never run out of inspiration.
To be successful, follow your passion first, and allow the money to follow. Doing anything else is a recipe for failure.

Jonathan and Sam, this is spot on and thank you for telling it like it is. How many blogs in the IM niche have we seen that start out strong and then just wither away? Way too many. The biggest sign is when the blog starts to no longer be updated (maybe the last post was written in November 2008 or so) and so it’s just taking up space on the Web, as the person has moved on to other things.
Real blogging means writing, for one thing. And that means work. A little bit like being a journalist in that regard. So yes, if one is going to make money blogging, one has to be passionate about the subject matter and about blogging itself. Maybe not for everybody. But it’s a great way for a newbie to get published and be out there on the Web. That’s no small thing!
I don’t read make money blog much but those in SEO only. That’s the way to generate more money. Too many copycats out there with ‘empty’ contents. Like you said, better focus on writing instead of reading.
