Should you use a local domain name

I am often asked if I would recommend using a local domain name, and to be honest, it really depends on what your website is being used for.

If your market is the rest of the world then you really can’t beat a .com. This is the most well know suffix and it is automatically recognised the whole world over. If the .com of your choice is unavailable I would go down the route of a .net  or a .org In my experience they are not as good but people who are into this type of thing tell me that they are just a effective.

With regards to the local domain name from your own country, you have to look at it in the eyes of the visitors to your website. You may find that some people don’t even consider which country the website is based in if it is a .com but when you start using other domains it sometimes makes them think a little.

If you have an Adsense site or an affiliate blog I don’t think that it really matters, but if you are selling a product, well that is when people are going  to thing about where they are ordering from.

Whilst we are on the subject, it would be a good idea to mention .info domain names. The main attraction of these domain names is that they are very cheap, sometimes less than a dollar per domain but this is where the problem lies, it used to be the case where marketers would create thousands of spammy websites, each one on a .info domain name, this type of website was soon de indexed by Google and it seems that the problem has unfortunately stuck. You do get some internet marketers who swear by these .info domains, saying that there is no problem whatsoever with them but I am afraid that you are going to have to make up your own mind, I personally don’t touch them but that does that not mean that you shouldn’t either.

"domain names"Back to the original question, if I had a business in the UK for example that was selling to the UK market I would go for the local domain name which is .co.uk. My reasoning is that the name would inspire more trust in the UK market. However, if I had a business in the UK which sold to the rest of the world, and was not something peculiar to the UK market, I would choose a .com domain name.

That simple rule would apply to websites which are run by people all over the world with their countries own particular domain name.

You will find that so many people in internet marketing have differing opinions with regard to domain names and like many things in the industry, an opinion can sometimes be repeated on forums etc and then everyone believes it as the gospel truth.

The way I use domains has always worked for me and I can’t see it changing in any way but if it does, I’ll be sure to let you know.

I have successfully used my main domain name (http://www.dsm-publishing.co.uk) and I have had no problems making money online with it.
