Social Bookmarking Sites: Understanding Social Bookmarking

Social Bookmarking sites can be an absolute nightmare to get focused on and understand social bookmarking sites is a fantastic way to start. It is something that you hear about every waking moment of your internet marketing career yet you know very little about it or exactly where to get started.

I remember reading an ebook about a year or so ago about what you should do with your articles once you had finished writing them. It went something along the lines of submit it to ezinearticles.com or goarticles.com followed by submitting it to other free article directories a few days later. You were then told to wait a week and blast the link through to your original article to at least twenty social bookmarking sites.

This was when I felt extremely confused – for starters what on earth was this social bookmarking and why did it make such a difference. So I did what most people do that don’t understand social bookmarking I stayed clear from it hoping that it would disappear off the earth and I would never have to hear the words “social bookmarking” as long as I lived.

However last December when I set up this very Blog I realised that it was time to actually take note and do something about it. By this point I had a few chats with different people about it. Some loved it the others didn’t understand it and the remainder loathed it.

This is what I soon discovered….

Social Bookmarking in my eyes is a way of informing others of your link to your Product, Blog, Press Release, Article or even Special Offer. By simply informing people of your link via Social Bookmarking sites others have the chance to rate your links and because these sites have an amazing ranking with Google you are creating instant backlinks back to your products or services. The actual link that you have submitted enters the search engines and the keywords that you are using appear a lot quicker compared to waiting for Google to rank them personally.

Social Bookmarking sites vary dramatically from site to site. Some allow you to host a full profile and invite friends in a similar way to what Twitter or FaceBook offers. Whilst others just involve submitting your link and that is it. Some are stricter than others just like the difference we associate between FaceBook & Twitter. Reddit for example will only let you submit one an hour so if you say write five articles a day and do your bookmarking one afternoon a week you may have a problem!

Others will let you import your bookmarking onto other sites this can save you time as it is a very time consuming task. You have to remember that even though social bookmarking is very important to enhance the traffic through to your website if you can find a way to do it quicker you should take advantage.

I would recommend when you are doing it to do more than one at once as if you just when round twenty directories just posting the one link it will take you forever. Aim for bookmarking once a week and do it all over a morning, afternoon or evening.

The worst part is when you first do it as it can take up a lot of time and energy. You need username and passwords for many accounts and a profile to enter with your photo. Once this is done though and you get used to the sites that you are using it is rather straight forward.

For your first bookmarks you need to go back and cover all the links you already have and would set a day a side for this or pay someone else to it on your behalf. Do your old Blog posts including the homepage, about us and any other pages that feature on it. You can then repeat the task on your websites bookmarking any sales pages that you own or free gifts that you offer as viral marketing.

Once you get into the habit of doing it you will find it becomes rather easy and if you just have the one Blog it can be done in very little time.
