Would you like fries and a coke with your cheeseburger?

If you are an internet marketer you have to think about how much profit you will make from every customer that visits your shop. Which could be by visiting your squeeze page, website or blog no matter how they head in your direction you have to see the full picture.

Take McDonalds as an example a customer will walk into one of their restaurants with the sole intention of purchasing a cheeseburger to eat as they walk around their local town. That is all that they want as they walk towards the serving counter but then the sales assistant will be ready with the upsell. They will ask them if they want chips with it along with a drink. Some customers will turn they down flat because they just don’t want the extras whilst other people will be tempted. The funny thing is that nobody actually mind’s this upsell and don’t think of it as hard sell.

However if you went down your local electronics store it would be a total different story. You would be hounded to the point where you wanted to make a swift exit because they were trying to force on you their latest insurance policy that you know full well that you don’t need. You are also fully aware that the only reason they want you to take up the offer is because of their commission and without it their salary is very low.

So these are two examples of upsells one that is welcome the other that is really hated but the question is do your customers love or hate yours?

"burger and fries"For example there is nothing wrong with offering an upsell when someone joins your mailing list or goes to purchase one of your products but it must blend in with what they are already interested in. If you are offering upsells via your followers on Twitter create a twitter based product that people can buy after they have joined your mailing list.

At the end of the day if you offer something of value people will buy it time and time again then go on to recommend you to others. This is your sole aim and with an upsell you can seriously add to your online income. Another reason for it is if a customer has just visited you they have done so for a reason and it is a great way to get repeat sales from them. They already have their wallet out and you are simply sending them to one of your amazing offers and the discount is too good to miss.

But only offer the one during each upsell – if you offer more than one a customer will get sick of it and is likely to get annoyed by it. Just like you should never pressure the customer to take up your offer. I recently saw someone offering an upsell and when I clicked no thanks I was asked again whether or not I wanted it. This really put me off this particular site and I soon unsubscribed.

When you plan your upsell do it nice and gently don’t go for the overkill just offer it to them on a plate. This way many will take up your offer and you can enjoy lots of automated sales.

No, I am not trying to upsell new furniture to you, just wondering:-). I am coming here regularily since there is allways something in it to learn for me. Even for awareness buying the next Burger at McDonalds – or Burger King which I personally prefer. Cheers, Dirk
